Sitting in the power is a meditative practice in which you sit consciously within your own spiritual energy — your "power" — and allow it to build, settle and expand. Unlike mediumistic sitting, you are not reaching out for spirit contact. You are strengthening the ground that all spirit contact stands on.It is, quite simply, the foundation of mediumship development. Ask almost any working medium what one practice they would never give up, and this is the answer you will hear.<h2 id="cf0d340f-77ef-4df8-9a05-0f79c7ae8646" data-toc-id="cf0d340f-77ef-4df8-9a05-0f79c7ae8646" style="text-align: left; font-size: 24px; line-height: 1.2;">What do we mean by "the power"?</h2>Every one of us carries a spiritual energy of our own — call it the soul's presence, the life force, or simply your power. In ordinary life it sits quietly in the background. When you sit in the power, you turn your attention fully towards it: not imagining something new, but becoming aware of something that was always there.With practice, that awareness grows. The power builds, steadies and expands — and it is within this heightened, settled state that the blending between a medium and the spirit world becomes natural rather than strained.<h2 id="9837bd3e-e8d0-4766-a614-eefa710c56cb" data-toc-id="9837bd3e-e8d0-4766-a614-eefa710c56cb" style="text-align: left; font-size: 24px; line-height: 1.2;">How is it different from meditation?</h2>The two look identical from the outside: a person sitting quietly with their eyes closed. The intention is what separates them.Most meditation aims to still the mind, release attachment, or cultivate mindfulness. Sitting in the power has a different purpose: to build and expand your own spiritual energy and, in time, to let the spirit world draw close to that energy. Meditation empties; sitting in the power fills. Many students find meditation helps to prepare, but it is not a substitute — and this is one of the most common confusions I meet in my teaching.<h2 id="5c0819b7-0f59-48f5-9ddd-aec69d67ec05" data-toc-id="5c0819b7-0f59-48f5-9ddd-aec69d67ec05" style="text-align: left; font-size: 24px; line-height: 1.2;">Why mediums swear by it</h2>Over more than thirty-five years of teaching — including my years as a tutor and course organiser at the Arthur Findlay College — I have watched this one practice transform more developing mediums than any other exercise. Mediums who sit regularly are noticeably calmer on the platform and in private sittings. Even for those with no interest in mediumship, sitting in the power is a nourishing spiritual practice in its own right.<h2 id="5e1f0cd1-e6f6-4eab-b7f4-5dc8a8112e88" data-toc-id="5e1f0cd1-e6f6-4eab-b7f4-5dc8a8112e88" style="text-align: left; font-size: 24px; line-height: 1.2;">How to sit in the power: a simple way to begin</h2>There is no single "correct" method, but this is a gentle way in:<ol type="1" style="margin-top: 0cm;"><li>Settle. Sit upright and comfortable, feet on the floor, hands resting. Close your eyes and let your breathing slow to its own natural rhythm.</li><li>Find your centre. Bring your attention to the centre of your body — many people use the solar plexus or the heart. Rest there without forcing anything.</li><li>Acknowledge your power. Become aware of your own energy in that centre. You might sense it as warmth, light, weight or simple presence. However it comes is right for you.</li><li>Let it build and expand. With each breath, allow that energy to grow and gently expand — through the body, then beyond it, filling the space around you. Don't push; allow.</li><li>Sit within it. This is the heart of the practice. Simply remain, aware and present, inside your own power. Ten to fifteen minutes is plenty at first.</li><li>Close down. Let the energy settle back to your centre, feel your feet on the floor, and open your eyes. It isn't. The contact, when your development is ready for it, arises because of the power you have built; chasing it collapses the very state you are building. The second mistake is inconsistency: twenty minutes twice a week, kept up for months, will do more for you than an occasional heroic hour. And the third is judging each sitting. Some days the power feels like an ocean; some days like a puddle. Two or three times a week is a solid rhythm for development. Daily is lovely if life allows, but consistency matters far more than quantity.How long should each sitting last? Ten to fifteen minutes at first, building towards twenty or thirty as the state becomes familiar.Do I need to be a medium to practise it? Not at all. It is a beautiful spiritual practice for anyone — many people sit purely for the peace and strength it brings.Is sitting in the power safe? Yes.
